ChatGPT can now turn a photo or an idea into a custom sticker pack and send the results directly to iMessage or WhatsApp, removing much of the manual work normally involved in creating messaging stickers.
The feature is part of ChatGPT Images, so it can do more than cut a person or object out of an existing photograph. Users can ask ChatGPT to reinterpret a photo in a different visual style, generate stickers from a written description, or make changes to an image before turning it into something suitable for a conversation.
Start With a Photo or an Idea
The simplest way to find the feature is through the ChatGPT app on iPhone or Android.
Open the app’s main menu, select “Images”, and choose “Stickers.” ChatGPT provides a sticker-specific workflow where users can start with an existing photo or describe what they want generated. OpenAI also allows users to begin by asking ChatGPT directly to create a sticker pack instead of starting from the template.
A personal photo can become the basis for a set of reactions, while a text prompt can create something that never existed as a photograph.
For example, instead of simply requesting a sticker of a dog, a more useful prompt might ask for a set showing the same dog celebrating, looking confused, sleeping and reacting with surprise.
That gives the image generator information about both the subject and how the stickers are intended to be used.
The sticker interface also provides style choices and lets users use emoji as guidance for expressions or reactions. Apple’s current App Store feature page for ChatGPT lists options including hand-drawn, anime and meme-style treatments.
You Can Refine the Stickers Before Using Them
The first result does not have to be the final one.
ChatGPT Images supports editing existing generated images and uploaded photos. Users can open an image and describe what they want changed, such as altering an expression, removing an object, changing the visual style or requesting a transparent background.
A prompt can specify which characteristics should remain consistent while changing the pose or expression.
If the generated result has moved too far away from the original photo, it can also be useful to start again with more specific instructions rather than repeatedly modifying an unsuitable result.
ChatGPT Can Add the Stickers Directly to Messaging Apps
Once a sticker pack is ready, the mobile experience includes an “Add to chat apps” option.
OpenAI says generated packs can be downloaded or added to iMessage and WhatsApp on supported devices.
On an iPhone, choosing iMessage makes the ChatGPT-created stickers available from the sticker interface in Apple’s Messages app. Apple’s Messages interface supports sticker collections from both Apple’s own tools and third-party sticker apps.
Android users will not see an iMessage destination because Apple’s messaging service is not available on Android, but ChatGPT can export sticker packs to WhatsApp.
After a pack has been added to WhatsApp, its stickers can be selected through WhatsApp’s normal sticker interface and sent like other saved stickers.
WhatsApp itself also supports creating custom stickers from photos, as well as its own AI-generated stickers in supported regions. ChatGPT’s advantage is primarily the ability to generate and substantially restyle the source image before exporting the result.
iPhone Users Already Have Another Option
ChatGPT is not required if the goal is simply to turn the subject of an existing iPhone photo into a sticker.
Apple has a built-in feature that can lift a person, pet or other subject from a photo and add it directly to the iPhone’s sticker collection. Users can also apply effects such as Comic or Outline, while Live Photos can be turned into animated Live Stickers.
ChatGPT becomes more useful when the desired result involves generation rather than extraction. Instead of using the exact subject from a photo, it can create new poses, expressions and artistic interpretations based on that image.
That makes the two approaches complementary rather than direct replacements for one another.
Image Generation Limits Still Apply
Creating stickers uses ChatGPT’s image-generation capabilities, so it is subject to the image limits associated with a user’s plan.
OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available across its plans, including the Free tier. However, image creation has a separate usage allowance, and Free users can temporarily reach that limit even when ordinary text chat remains available. ChatGPT displays a notice when the applicable image limit has been reached. There is no published universal number of sticker generations that applies to every account, so users should rely on the limit information shown inside ChatGPT rather than expecting a fixed daily or weekly allowance.
For people who regularly use stickers in group chats, the feature offers a relatively direct path from a photo or written idea to something usable in a messaging app.
