AI company OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a new version of the AI assistant that adds stronger safety protections, learning tools and parental controls for users under 18.
Users who state that they are between 13 and 17, or who OpenAI’s systems estimate are under 18, will automatically be placed into the teen experience.
The new version puts a greater emphasis on learning rather than simply providing answers. It includes Study Mode, quizzes and learning visualizations, along with new homework reminders that can redirect teens toward step-by-step problem solving when they appear to be using ChatGPT to shortcut an assignment.
OpenAI is also introducing Study Hours, allowing teens or their parents to choose times when Study Mode will be enabled by default.
Safety protections are built into the teen experience and cover areas including self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities and explicit or graphic content.
Parents with linked accounts can use controls including Quiet Hours and selected account settings, while OpenAI says it is expanding limited safety notifications to include concerns related to eating disorders.
ChatGPT for Teens also includes break reminders and warnings before teens upload potentially sensitive images. OpenAI says the system should not use romantic language with teenagers, encourage emotional dependence or suggest that the AI has feelings or consciousness.
The launch builds on OpenAI’s previous rollout of parental controls, age prediction and updated rules governing how ChatGPT should interact with users under 18.
Their goal is to give younger users access to AI for learning and creativity while applying protections designed specifically for their age group.
