Firefox for iOS Adds Built-In Ad Blocking

Mozilla has introduced a new built-in Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS, giving users another way to reduce intrusive advertising and ad-related tracking while browsing on an iPhone or iPad.

The optional feature blocks many third-party ads, advertising networks and trackers before they load. Mozilla says it relies on Apple’s WebKit Content Blocker technology together with the widely used EasyList filter list, so users do not need to install a separate browser extension.

Ad blocking is disabled by default and can be enabled in Settings >> Browsing >> Ad Blocker. Mozilla is introducing the feature through a progressive rollout, meaning it may not immediately appear for every Firefox for iOS user.

The blocker is not designed to remove every advertisement. Ads displayed within search engine results can still appear, while sponsored content shown on Firefox’s Home or New Tab pages is managed separately. Some website-served ads may also remain depending on how they are delivered.

The new feature works alongside Firefox’s existing privacy tools, including Enhanced Tracking Protection. While Firefox users on desktop and Android can choose from a wider range of privacy and ad-blocking extensions, iOS restrictions led Mozilla to build this option directly into the browser.

Mozilla describes the feature as another way to give users more control over their browsing experience while keeping ad blocking optional for people who prefer to support websites through advertising.
