How to Set Up a Mobile Hotspot on Windows or Mac Computer

In our increasingly connected world, having access to the internet while on the go is more important than ever. Whether you’re traveling, working remotely, or simply want to help friends connect their devices, knowing how to set up a mobile hotspot can be incredibly useful.

A mobile hotspot allows you to share your device’s internet connection with others, turning your laptop or desktop into a mini internet hub. A mobile hotspot can be a dedicated device or even a feature on your smartphone that lets you share your phone’s cellular data with other devices, creating a little Wi-Fi network wherever you are.

Think of it as a portable router—you can connect your tablet, laptop, or even another smartphone to the internet through your phone’s data connection. It’s perfect for those times when you’re on the go and need to stay connected, whether that’s for work, browsing, or staying in touch with family and friends.

Both Windows and Mac devices make this process easy to navigate. You can also review our article on setting up your mobile phone as a hotspot.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the simple steps to turn your computer into a mobile hotspot, ensuring you can stay connected no matter where you are.

Setting Up a Mobile Hotspot on Windows

If you’re using a Windows device, enabling the mobile hotspot feature is a breeze. Just follow these steps:

Open Settings: Click on the Start menu and select Settings (the gear icon). You can also optionally right-click icon or click Start and search for “settings.”

In the Settings window, click on Network & Internet from the sidebar

Then select Mobile hotspot.

Choose Your Internet Connection: Under the “Share my internet connection from” section, select the internet connection you want to share—whether it’s Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or another source.

Select Sharing Method: In the Share over section, choose how you want to share your connection. Wi-Fi is typically faster and is the default option, but you can also select Bluetooth if needed.

Customize Network: If you want to personalize your network, expand the Properties section. Click on Edit to change the network name and password. You can even adjust the network band if you wish. Once you’ve made your changes, click Save.

Finally, toggle the Mobile hotspot switch at the top of the page to turn it on.

Connect Other Devices

Once your hotspot is active, connecting other devices is simple. Just head to their Wi-Fi settings, find your newly created network name, select it, enter the password you set (or use a QR code if you provided one), and voilà—you’re connected!

Note: If your Windows device has cellular capability, you can even turn on the mobile hotspot remotely! Just ensure that both devices are paired via Bluetooth.

Setting Up a Mobile Hotspot on Mac

For Mac users, enabling internet sharing is equally straightforward. Here’s how to get started:

First, open System Settings (click on the Apple menu icon in the top left corner of your screen and select System Settings.)

Access sharing options from the sidebar by clicking on General, and then scroll down to Sharing.

Turn on Internet Sharing. You’ll then see a Configure button—click it.

Select Your Internet Source: From the “Share your connection from” menu, choose the internet connection you want to share (like Ethernet or Wi-Fi).

Choose Access Method: In the To devices using section, check the option for how other devices will access your connection. For sharing over Wi-Fi, make sure the Wi-Fi checkbox is selected.

Customize Your Network: If you’re sharing over Wi-Fi, configure the internet-sharing network:

  • Network Name: Enter a name for your shared connection.
  • Channel: If you prefer a specific channel, select it from the channel menu.
  • Security: Choose a security option; WPA3 Personal is best if all devices support it. If some don’t, opt for WPA2/WPA3 Personal.
  • Password: Set a password for your network. If you want to see the password as you type, check the “Show password” box.
  • Finalize Setup: Click Done to save your settings.

Click Done to save your settings.

Connect Other Devices

Now that your Mac is sharing its internet connection, other devices can connect by selecting your network from their Wi-Fi settings and entering the password you created.
