Tablets are often extensions of our phones. Whether you are setting up a new iPad for work or entertainment, you likely want your passwords, photos, and messages to move over seamlessly from your iPhone.
While you can restore from an iCloud Backup, the most direct method is Apple’s “Quick Start” feature, which creates a peer-to-peer connection between your devices to clone your data instantly. For those who prefer a clean start, manually syncing via iCloud is a reliable alternative.
Quick Start (Direct Transfer)
This method transfers your Apple ID, Wi-Fi settings, and data directly without needing a computer.
You’ll need to ensure:
- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on your iPhone
- Both devices are charged or plugged into power
The Transfer Process
Turn on your new iPad and then place it right next to your iPhone.
A pop-up will appear on your iPhone screen asking if you want to use your Apple ID to set up your new iPad. Tap Continue.
An animation (a swirling blue pattern) will show on the iPad screen. Hold your iPhone over the iPad so the animation is centered in the viewfinder (camera).
When prompted, enter your iPhone’s passcode on the iPad, then follow the on-screen prompts to set up Face ID or Touch ID.
Select Transfer from iPhone.
Note: Keep the devices close together until the progress bar completes. This can take anywhere from several minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have.
Manual iCloud Sync
If you prefer to set up the iPad as a “fresh” device rather than a clone of your phone, you can simply sign in and choose which data to sync.
Set up your iPad as “Don’t Transfer Apps & Data” then sign in with your Apple ID when prompted.
Once on the home screen, go to Settings >> YOUR NAME >> iCloud.
Tap Show All under “Apps Using iCloud” and verify that the switches are ON for the core apps you want to appear on the iPad, such as:
- Photos (iCloud Photos)
- Notes
- Messages
- Passwords and Keychain
Your photos and messages will populate gradually as they download from the cloud, but your home screen layout and app organization will remain clean.
Using Quick Start is the fastest way to clone your digital environment to a new tablet. However, for those who want a fresh start without the clutter of their old phone, manually toggling iCloud sync provides a cleaner, more controlled setup.
