How to Set Custom Ringtones on Android and iPhone

While standard ringtones are functional, many users prefer to customize their alert sounds. Whether it is to distinguish between personal and professional calls, or simply to identify specific contacts without looking at the screen, a custom tone adds a layer of personal utility to your device.

Modern smartphones handle custom audio differently. Android offers an open system that allows for multiple methods—including simple apps—while iOS requires specific conversion steps to ensure system security and quality.

Android Custom Ringtones

Android’s open file system makes customization straightforward. You can either manually place audio files into system folders or use third-party applications to handle the process for you.

Using a Custom Audio File (Manual Method)

If you already have an MP3, WAV, or OGG file, you can set it as a ringtone without installing extra software.

Transfer the File: Download or move the audio file to your phone’s Music or Downloads folder.

Settings Menu: Open Settings > Sound & vibration > Phone ringtone.

Select File: Tap My Sounds or Custom Ringtone. If you don’t see your file, tap the + (Plus) icon or “Add from device storage” to browse your folders.

Using Ringtone Apps

If you do not have a file ready, the Google Play Store offers apps that function as marketplaces for tones.

Download: Search for highly-rated apps like Zedge or Ringtone Maker in the Play Store.

Browse & Set: These apps allow you to browse libraries of sound effects or songs. Once you find one, tap the “Set” or “Download” button.

Permissions: You will need to grant the app permission to “Modify System Settings” so it can change the ringtone on your behalf.

Setting Individual Contact Ringtones

Open the Contacts app.

Tap the specific contact you wish to customize.

Tap the three-dot menu (or “Edit”) and select Set Ringtone. This overrides the default system sound for that specific person.

iPhone Custom Ringtones

Apple does not allow users to simply select an MP3 from their files as a ringtone. You must either create one using Apple’s creative tools or purchase one directly.

The GarageBand Method (Free & Custom)

This is the only way to use your own song files (MP3/AAC) without paying. It involves “tricking” the system by exporting a project as a tone.

Ensure your song file is saved in the Files app.

Download GarageBand from the App Store. Once installed, open it, select Audio Recorder, and tap the Tracks View icon (lines) followed by the Loop Browser icon (loop).

Select the Files tab and drag your song onto the timeline.

Trim the clip to 30 seconds or less. Tap the arrow (top left) > My Songs. Long-press the project > Share > Ringtone. Name it and tap Export.

The iTunes Store (Paid)

If GarageBand feels too technical or you prefer a quick solution, you can also buy tones.

Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone.

Tap Tone Store. This opens the iTunes Store where you can buy alert tones starting at $0.99 or $1.29.

Once purchased, they appear automatically in your settings list.

Customizing your ringtone is more than just an aesthetic choice; it is a productivity tool. By assigning distinct sounds to family members or work contacts, you can filter incoming calls by ear, allowing you to ignore spam and prioritize what matters without ever touching your phone
