Managing digital subscriptions has become an essential part of personal finance. Most modern applications have shifted from one-time purchases to recurring monthly or yearly billing models. While this ensures apps stay updated, it also means charges can accumulate silently in the background if not actively monitored.
Unlike standard credit card charges, mobile subscriptions are often bundled under a single generic line item on bank statements. To stop a specific recurring charge, users need to manage their subscription within subscription management dashboards usually in the application’s hosted location like the application store.
Other apps also offer “free trials” which often (and sometimes silently) convert into a monthly charge/subscription. Because Apple and Google prioritize seamless payments, finding option to cancel can feel like a treasure hunt.
Central to managing these costs is knowing exactly where to look. Unlike standard credit card charges, mobile subscriptions are often bundled under a single “Apple” or “Google” line item on your bank statement. To stop a specific charge, you must navigate the specific management dashboards built into your device’s operating system.
Android – Google Play Store
On Android, the vast majority of app subscriptions are tied directly to your Google Play account. Uninstalling an application does not cancel the subscription; the billing agreement remains active until manually terminated.
Managing Active Subscriptions
Open the Google Play Store app.
Tap your Profile Icon in the top right corner.
Select Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions.
Select the active subscription you wish to modify.
Tap Cancel subscription.
Note: You will retain access to the premium features until the end of the current billing cycle.
If a subscription does not appear in the Google Play list, it was likely purchased directly through the app developer (common with services like Spotify, Netflix, or newspaper apps). You’ll need to log in to the service’s website via a web browser and manage the billing from their account settings page.

iPhone – App Store
Apple centralizes app billing through your Apple ID. This provides a single location to view all recurring charges initiated through the App Store.
Managing Active Subscriptions
Open the Settings app.
Tap your Name/Apple ID at the very top of the menu.
Tap Subscriptions.
Select the active subscription you want to end.
Tap Cancel Subscription.
Note: If you don’t see a “Cancel” button but only see renewal options in red text, the subscription has already been canceled and will not renew.
Investigating Unrecognized Charges If a charge appears on your bank statement but not in your Subscriptions list:
Family Sharing: Check if a family member sharing your payment method initiated the purchase.
Secondary Apple ID: Ensure you are not logged into a different Apple ID used for media purchases.
You can also manage subscriptions, or get further support, on the Apple subscription and billing website here.
Regularly auditing these menus ensures you are only paying for services you actively use. It is best practice to cancel a subscription immediately after disabling the auto-renew feature if you do not intend to keep it long-term, as you will still receive the service for the time you have already paid.
