With Meta AI now integrated across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and its own standalone app, millions of users interact with the assistant daily for help with planning, brainstorming, or answering questions. But recent attention around how conversations may be publicly visible—or used to train AI models—has raised valid concerns about privacy defaults and user awareness.
While Meta maintains that chats are private unless explicitly shared, the process for controlling data visibility and training use isn’t always obvious. In some cases, users have unknowingly published sensitive conversations, including personal, legal, or medical information, to a public feed accessible without login.
If you’re using Meta AI or considering it, these are some key settings users should review to maintain control over their interactions with Meta AI.
Know Where You’re Using Meta AI
Meta AI appears in several places. They include:
- The Meta AI standalone app
- Facebook and Instagram (chat or feed integration)
- WhatsApp (via AI-powered messaging)
Each platform handles privacy a little differently, and default behaviors may change depending on whether you’re logged in or using multiple Meta services on the same device.
Avoid Accidentally Sharing Conversations
In the Meta AI app, there’s a “Share” button visible after most prompts. Tapping it opens a preview post, which if published, appears publicly in the Discover feed. Users have reported unintentionally publishing chats through this feature.
To stay private:
- Avoid using the Share button unless you’re certain you want the chat to be public.
- Check prompt visibility settings in the app:
- Tap your profile icon
- Go to App Settings >> Data & Privacy >> Manage Your Information
- Set “Make all your prompts visible to only you”
Understand How Your Conversations Are Used
According to Meta, conversations with Meta AI can be reviewed by human teams and may be used to train its models, even on platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram. These chats are not end-to-end encrypted, and opting out isn’t automatic.
To limit your data use:
- Visit Settings & Privacy >> Privacy Center and scroll to Privacy Topics >> AI at Meta
- Choose the platform (e.g., WhatsApp, Facebook)
- Submit an objection request to opt out of AI training
Delete Your AI Conversations
If you’ve interacted with Meta AI and want to remove past messages:
On Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp, you can simply type:
/reset-ai
This command deletes your AI conversation history in that chat.
Note that deletion may not guarantee complete removal from training datasets already processed.
Meta AI can be useful, but it comes with trade-offs. If privacy is essential for your use case, such as dealing with sensitive topics or confidential information, it may be safer to minimize use or ensure you’re logged out while using it.
As generative AI becomes more tightly integrated into social and messaging platforms, it’s increasingly important to review the defaults. Privacy isn’t always the default setting, especially with interconnected services and when sharing and personalization features are built in. Take a few minutes to review your Meta AI privacy settings, and remind colleagues or family members who may not realize what’s visible to others.
