DeepSeek is one of the latest free AI chat tools to hit the technology scene in recent weeks. Founded in China and freely available, it has boasted capabilities that match the top models out, like ChatGPT, Meta’s Llama, Microsoft’s Copilot, or xAI (X, formely Twitter’s AI company)’s Grok.
AI (artificial intelligence) is the technology powering computers to simulate or perform human-like tasks. These type of conversational chat services utilizing natural language processing (NLP) and large language models (LLM) as its dataset, or brain. (You can learn more about AI on our article here.)
It gained even more buzz rattling markets for being as advanced as the top leaders in AI, in a short amount of time. It was released less than 2 years ago in 2023, and reports claim costs of developing to be fractions of the reported top spending on AI.
Innovation and Open Sourcing
Alongside its quick to market and capability, they have also open-sourced many of their models. Open-source would mean the powering base code is publicly available, which is in contrast to many major leaders in the field where they are closed source.
This transparency has sparked innovation within AI technologies, allowing all from students, researches, and developers to learn. There is however still concern on the transparency in its data practices and laws, as it’s based in China.
On a social media post, they also confirmed the basis and highlighted common collaborative benefits of open sourcing:

Like many of the popular models out today, DeepSeek also does have a free version available. You can utilize their AI service by web on their website deepseek.com, via mobile application on your devices, or API for developers.
