Waymo, a leading company in autonomous vehicle technology, has announced its arrival to New York City next month. The company is actively working toward expanding its autonomous vehicle services in the region.
According to a post on their official Twitter/X profile, Waymo has applied for a permit from the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) to operate autonomous vehicles within the city with a safety specialist present during testing.

Waymo was previously in NYC in 2021 with non-autonomous vehicles for mapping tests.
This step is part of their broader efforts to develop and eventually deploy autonomous ride-hailing services in New York.
In addition to local testing permits, Waymo is advocating for legislative changes at the state level to enable the deployment of fully autonomous ride-hailing services across New York. These initiatives aim to enhance mobility options, improve safety, and streamline transportation in the city.
As the company advances its testing and regulatory efforts, it moves closer to potentially offering autonomous mobility solutions tailored to New York City’s urban environment.
