T-Mobile has opened access to its new satellite connectivity service, T-Satellite, developed in collaboration with Starlink. The service aims to provide coverage in remote areas where traditional cellular networks are unavailable. It leverages Starlink’s extensive satellite network, making it the largest of its kind globally, and is the first US-based mobile provider to operate a space-based network integrated with its cellular infrastructure.
T-Satellite is a space-based mobile network technology that automatically connects compatible smartphones to Starlink’s satellite constellation. Initially available in beta, the service allows users to send and receive text messages via satellite, offering an additional layer of coverage beyond the reach of conventional cell towers.
How It Works
Utilizing satellite-to-mobile technology, T-Satellite functions like a cellphone tower in space. During the beta phase, users can send and receive standard text messages without the need for apps or manual setup. The service is compatible with over 60 Android and iOS devices and requires no special configuration—just keep your phone in view of the sky.
Powered by Starlink’s constellation of over 600 satellites, T-Satellite covers most outdoor areas where the sky is visible, including over 500,000 square miles in the U.S.—nearly four times the size of California. The service is designed to operate in areas that lack traditional cellular signals, with plans to expand to international waters and abroad.
T-Satellite beta is being offered free of charge until July 2024, open to anyone with a compatible device and an active phone plan, regardless of carrier. Non T-Mobile users can subscribe for $10/month for a limited time. Users can sign up now, with limited spots available.
Post-launch, T-Satellite will be included in the carrier’s “Experience Beyond” plan, with early adopters continuing to receive free service through the end of 2024.
While current capabilities are limited to satellite messaging, T-Mobile plans to introduce additional features, including photo sharing, voice calling, and data services, in future updates.
