Snapchat has recently announced changes to the way users store their most cherished Snaps. With over 1 trillion Memories saved since the feature launched in 2016 and it being a central part of the user ‘s experience, the company is introducing a tiered storage model to better support long-term use and continued growth.
They’ve released Memories Storage Plans, aimed at users who store more than 5 GB of content in their Memories.
For most Snapchatters, those with under 5 GB of stored Memories, nothing will change. You’ll continue to access and save Snaps to your Memories as normal at no additional cost.
Users with Memories exceeding the 5 GB limit will now need to upgrade to a paid plan to continue storing more content in the cloud.
The new plans are designed to meet a range of storage needs:
- Standard Plan: 100GB of Memories storage
- Snapchat+ Bundle: 250GB with a Snapchat+ subscription
- Snapchat Platinum: 5TB for users with extensive storage needs
Snapchatters will receive 12 months of temporary storage for any data exceeding the free 5GB limit, giving them ample time to decide whether to upgrade, download, or manage their Memories.
Snapchat acknowledged that switching from a free to a paid model isn’t always easy, but the move helps in the platform’s commitment to improving long-term storage quality, performance and user experience, and allows more investment in the Memories feature.
How to Download and Export Your Memories
If you’re nearing or over the 5GB limit and don’t plan to upgrade right away, there is a 12-month grace period. If you want to export for backups, exporting is simple:
- Open Snapchat and swipe up from the Camera screen to access Memories
- Press and hold on any Snap, then tap ‘Export’
- Choose where you want to save the Snap (Camera Roll, Files, etc.)
To export multiple at once:
- Tap the Memories selector icon at the top of the screen
- Select the Snaps you want to export, then use the export options at the bottom of the screen
This is a quick and efficient way to preserve your favorite moments offline if you’re not ready to commit to a storage plan yet.
As user needs evolve, Snapchat is adapting by offering flexible storage options to ensure that your most meaningful Snaps are safe for the long haul.
