OpenAI’s ChatGPT Now Connects With Apps

Integrated apps have been launched for ChatGPT that work directly inside conversations, along with new developer tools for building them.Retry

Users can now access services from different apps and websites directly in ChatGPT. By mention a supported service by name in your message, ChatGPT can connect to it automatically. It can also recommend relevant apps during conversations, for eample discussing travel plans might prompt hotel booking options to appear.

They combine conversation with actual interactive features like maps, booking forms, and design tools.

Several companies launched apps including Booking, Coursera, Figma, and Spotify.

OpenAI also released the Apps SDK as an open-source toolkit built on the Model Context Protocol. Developers can create custom interfaces, connect to their own servers, and let existing customers log in with their accounts.

Apps can be tested in Developer Mode right away. Later this year, OpenAI will start accepting public submissions and introduce ways for developers to make money, including a new system for in-chat purchases. First-time app users see a permission prompt explaining what data gets shared. All apps must follow OpenAI’s content policies and include transparent privacy practices. More detailed privacy controls are planned for later in 2024.

This move positions ChatGPT as a platform, not just a tool. With 800 million users and an open development standard, OpenAI is essentially creating an app ecosystem that competes with traditional app stores but accessed entirely through conversation. Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will get app access later this year, along with a browsable app directory for discovering new integrations.
