ChatGPT Health, a new dedicated health-focused experience introduced by OpenAI, brings together personal health data, wellness tools, and AI assistance to help users better understand test results, prepare for medical appointments, and navigate everyday health decisions with clearer context.
Health questions are already among the most common topics users bring to ChatGPT, with hundreds of millions of health-related interactions taking place every week. At the same time, most people still face scattered information—medical records in different portals, fitness data in separate apps, and test results buried in PDFs. This fragmentation makes it difficult to see a complete picture of personal health.
ChatGPT Health was developed in consultation with physicians worldwide to help ensure that responses are responsible, practical, and safe. Over the past two years, more than 260 doctors from over 60 countries and multiple specialties contributed input.
Their involvement helped shape when and how the system encourages medical follow-up, how information should be explained clearly without oversimplifying, and how responses should prioritize safety and user context Performance is assessed using HealthBench, a physician-influenced evaluation framework that focuses on real-world usefulness rather than exam-style accuracy.
ChatGPT Health aims to reduce that complexity by securely connecting relevant information so users can:
- Make sense of lab results
- Prepare for doctor visits
- Track health trends over time
- Ask wellness questions grounded in personal context
- Interpret data from wearables and health apps
The key goal is not to replace medical professionals but to support better conversations and understanding.
ChatGPT Health operates in its own protected space within the platform. Users can securely connect electronic medical records (via partners like b.well in the U.S.), Apple Health data, as well as popular wellness and fitness tools such as MyFitnessPal, Function, Peloton, Weight Watchers, and AllTrails
Once connected, the system can reference relevant information to make guidance more personalized. Some examples in their announcements include:
- “How has my cholesterol changed recently?”
- “Can you summarize my latest bloodwork before I see my doctor?”
- “What should I bring up at my annual physical?”
- “How do I ease back into fitness after having a baby?”
This shifts the experience from generic advice to contextual assistance.
Because health data is highly sensitive, OpenAI designed ChatGPT Health with additional protections beyond standard ChatGPT conversations.
Some of the safeguards include:
- A separate health space isolated from regular chats
- Health conversations excluded from model training
- Additional encryption and compartmentalization
- Strict permission controls for every connected app
- The ability to disconnect or delete health data at any time
- Optional multi-factor authentication
Users remain fully in control of what is shared and how long it stays connected.
Availability and Access
ChatGPT Health is rolling out gradually. Users can join a waitlist, with early access initially available to a limited number of users. The experience will expand further as development continues. Some capabilities, such as medical record integrations, are currently available only in the U.S.
Once access is available, users can open the Health section inside ChatGPT, upload documents or connected supported apps, add any custom preferences for how health toopics are discussed, then ask health-related questions or request summaries.
From lab result explanations to fitness planning to insurance comparisons, ChatGPT Health aims to make health information easier to understand and engage with. It marks a significant step toward using AI to support everyday health literacy. As integrations and capabilities expand, it has the potential to help people feel more informed, organized, and confident while still relying on professional healthcare guidance when needed.
