OpenAI has introduced new parental control features for ChatGPT, allowing parents and guardians to manage how teens interact with the AI tool. The update includes account linking, content restrictions, usage limits, and new safeguards aimed at creating a safer experience for younger users.
Parents can now connect their accounts with their teen’s, giving them access to settings like:
- Time limits
- Disabling voice mode or image generation
- Turning off memory or opting out of model training
- Restricting access to certain types of content
Once linked, teen accounts automatically receive added protections by default — including filters to reduce exposure to graphic content, romantic or violent roleplay, viral challenges, and extreme beauty ideals. Teens can’t disable these settings on their own, but parents have the option to adjust them.
The system also includes a notification feature that alerts parents if ChatGPT detects signs a teen may be in distress or in serious cases emergency services, though the company emphasizes its commitment to privacy.
The update is part of OpenAI’s broader efforts to create age-appropriate AI experiences. The company is also working on an age prediction system to automatically apply teen settings when user age is unclear.
A dedicated parent resource hub has also been launched, offering information on how ChatGPT works, how to use the new controls, and tips for using the AI responsibly at home. While the tools offer more oversight, OpenAI notes they are not foolproof and recommends combining them with open conversations around responsible AI use.
