Microsoft Authenticator Autofill and Passkeys Will Be Discontinued in Update

Microsoft is making significant updates to how its Authenticator app handles password management and passkeys. If you use Microsoft Authenticator to store passwords or sign in securely, it’s important to understand what’s changing and how it might affect you.

Microsoft is focusing on making your password management experience better by integrating with Microsoft Edge, their secure web browser. Going forward, your saved passwords and addresses will be stored in your Microsoft account and can be used seamlessly in Edge, which offers a modern, secure, and easy way to manage your passwords.

In July of this year, the autofill feature — which automatically fills in your passwords on websites and apps — will be discontinued within Microsoft Authenticator. Instead, Microsoft is shifting to a new system that integrates more closely with Microsoft Edge and your Microsoft account, providing a more seamless and secure experience. Along with the autofill update, there will also be changes to how passkeys are supported.

Starting in June, you won’t be able to save new passwords in Microsoft Authenticator anymore. After the feature that automatically fills your passwords is discontinued, all previously saved passwords and addresses won’t be accessible in the app anymore.

Saved Data

Your passwords and addresses are safely stored in your Microsoft account. You’ll still be able to access and use them, but now through Microsoft Edge instead of Authenticator. If you switch to another password manager like Google Password Manager or iCloud Keychain, you will need to import your passwords into that service manually.

To continue having your passwords automatically filled in on your devices, you’ll need to use Microsoft Edge as your autofill provider. Here’s how to do that:

On Android:

  • Download the Microsoft Edge browser.
  • Go to your device Settings > Autofill.
  • Choose Preferred service and select Change.
  • Pick Edge from the list.

If you’ve set up passkeys (a secure login method), make sure Authenticator is enabled as your passkey provider in Settings.

On iPhone or iPad:

  • Download Microsoft Edge.
  • Go to Settings > Passwords.
  • Under Autofill from, select Edge.
  • Keep your passkeys enabled if you use them.

Once set up, open Edge, sign in with your Microsoft account, and your passwords and addresses will autofill just like before.

To ensure a smooth transition, it’s a good idea to back up any important data before the deadlines and set up Microsoft Edge as your autofill provider if you want to continue autofilling passwords easily.
