Meta has introduced an experimental Surface Keyboard and Touchpad feature for Quest 3 headsets as part of its Horizon OS version 85 update. The feature allows users to turn a desk or table into a virtual keyboard and touchpad for text input and cursor control.
Surface Keyboard and Touchpad uses hand tracking to detect finger movements on flat surfaces. Users can type on a projected virtual keyboard and control a cursor using gestures such as tapping to click, dragging, and two-finger scrolling. Meta says the feature is intended for casual productivity tasks like browsing, messaging, and using 2D applications, while a physical keyboard remains recommended for extended writing.
The feature is available through the Public Test Channel and can be enabled from the Experimental section in Quest settings. As with other test features, availability is rolling out gradually.
In addition to input and interface changes, Horizon OS 85 also includes several security and privacy updates. Quest devices now perform on-device malware scanning when apps are installed or updated, alerting users if known threats are detected. A new privacy indicator notifies users when applications access sensitive permissions such as the microphone or camera. The Quest Browser has also added passkey support for supported websites, enabling passwordless sign-in.
Horizon OS version 85 is currently rolling out to users enrolled in the Public Test Channel. More details on the update are available in Meta’s Quest official release notes here.
