IKEA aims completely rebuilds smart home ecosystem around universal connectivity standard. According to their official announcement, the furniture giant has launched a new line of smart home products built on Matter, a universal connectivity standard that allows smart home devices from different manufacturers to work together seamlessly.
The new product range reflects years of development and testing in real homes, according to the company, demonstrating a growing understanding of how people want smart products to work in their daily lives.
For years, smart home adoption has been hampered by compatibility issues, with devices from different brands often unable to communicate with each other. IKEA’s adoption of Matter addresses this fundamental problem by enabling their products to connect with devices and platforms across different brands.
The updated product line focuses on three core categories that provide the building blocks for a flexible smart home system:
Lighting: The new KAJPLATS smart bulb range offers eleven variations with different shapes, sizes, brightness levels, and features including color-changing and dimmable options. These bulbs provide enhanced functionality compared to IKEA’s previous TRÅDFRI range.
Sensors: Five specialized sensors designed for home monitoring and protection:
- Motion sensors for indoor and outdoor use
- Door/window sensors with smartphone notifications
- Temperature and humidity sensors
- Air quality sensors measuring CO₂ and particulate matter (PM2.5)
- Water leakage sensors for early detection
Control Devices: Remote controls with both button and scroll wheel options, plus smart plugs that can convert ordinary appliances into smart devices while tracking energy usage.
The Hub Requirement
All Matter-enabled devices require a compatible smart home hub to function. IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub acts as both a Matter controller and bridge, managing new Matter devices while ensuring legacy IKEA products remain functional. The hub can also control smart products from other manufacturers that support the Matter standard.
IKEA has indicated this launch is the first phase of a broader smart home strategy, with plans to expand into additional product categories, and its goal of making smart home technology easy to use, easy to understand, and affordable for the majority of consumers remains the same.
