The HDMI Forum has released the HDMI 2.2 Specification, a significant update to one of the most widely adopted high-definition multimedia interface standards for digital audio and video. As display resolutions, refresh rates, and content demands continue to grow, HDMI 2.2 aims to make devices better prepared for the content and formats of the future.
Higher Bandwidth
HDMI 2.2 supports up to 96Gbps of bandwidth—double what was available in HDMI 2.1. This increase is made possible by an updated data transfer method called Fixed Rate Link (FRL), which allows more data to pass through the cable without relying on compression.
This brings support for:
- Resolutions up to 16K at 60Hz and 12K at 120Hz
- Uncompressed 8K at 60Hz (full 4:4:4 chroma)
- 4K at 240Hz with 10-bit or 12-bit color
Clearer visuals, faster motion handling, and improved image fidelity—particularly valuable in gaming, large-scale displays, and professional environments.
New Cables for New Demands
Ultra96 HDMI Cables is a new category of cable to support higher speeds. These are certified to handle up to 96Gbps and meet stricter requirements for signal stability and interference reduction.
Ultra96 cables are backward compatible with older HDMI devices but are necessary to take full advantage of the new features offered by HDMI 2.2. Labeling will specify if 64Gbps, 80Gbps, or the full 96Gbps will be supported.
Smarter Features for Better Experiences
HDMI 2.2 includes several enhancements that improve audio/video quality, reduce delays, and simplify device setup:
- Variable Refresh Rate (VRR): Helps reduce visual artifacts in games by matching the display’s refresh rate to the graphics output.
- Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM): Automatically enables low-lag modes for gaming and interactive content.
- Quick Frame Transport (QFT): Reduces latency between source and display.
- Quick Media Switching (QMS): Removes delays when switching between video formats (e.g., jumping between different frame rates in streaming apps).
- Latency Indication Protocol (LIP): Helps maintain audio/video sync in complex setups, such as those using soundbars or AV receivers.
- eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel): Enables higher-quality audio formats to pass between devices, such as from a TV to a sound system.
- HDMI Cable Power: Lets active HDMI cables draw power directly from the HDMI port—no external power required.
It’s also fully backward compatible with previous versions. Devices and cables built on earlier HDMI versions will still work, but only HDMI 2.2-compliant hardware and cables can access the new bandwidth and features.
HDMI 2.2 is helping bring better performance, broader compatibility, and smoother experiences across devices.
