Google Releases Experimental Windows App with Instant Search and AI Integration

Google has launched a new experimental Windows application through its Labs program that promises to transform how users search across their devices. The app allows users to search their computer files, installed applications, Google Drive, and the web without ever leaving their current window or interrupting their workflow.

The standout feature is the Alt + Space keyboard shortcut which instantly brings up the search interface, whether you’re writing a document, browsing or even in the middle of a game. This helps eliminates the friction of switching between applications just to find information, addressing a common productivity pain point for Windows users.

The app also integrates Google Lens directly into the desktop experience, allowing users to select and search anything visible on their screen – from translating foreign text in images to getting help with homework problems. An AI Mode provides more detailed responses with follow-up questions and relevant links for deeper exploration.

Google is positioning this as an experiment rather than a full product launch, potentially still refining the experience and gauging interest in deeper desktop integration. It’s available exclusively through Google Labs, just requiring opt-in.

The release comes as tech companies increasingly compete to embed AI apps and assistants directly into operating systems and workflows.
