Google has announced new updates to Google Translate that integrate advanced translation capabilities from its Gemini AI models. The updates focus on improving text translation accuracy, enabling live speech-to-speech translation, and expanding language learning tools within the app.
According to Google, the goal of these changes is to better capture meaning, tone, and context in translations, rather than relying solely on direct word-for-word conversion.
Improved Text Translation Using Gemini
Google Translate now uses Gemini-powered models to deliver more natural and accurate text translations. The system is designed to better interpret nuanced language elements such as idioms, slang, and region-specific expressions.
This updated text translation capability is being rolled out in the United States and India, supporting translations between English and nearly 20 languages, including Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, and German. The update is available across Google Search, the Translate app on Android and iOS, and the web version of Translate.
Live Speech-to-Speech Translation in Beta
Google is also introducing a beta feature for live speech-to-speech translation using headphones. This feature allows users to hear real-time translations directly in their preferred language while listening to spoken conversations, presentations, or media content.
The beta version preserves vocal characteristics such as tone and pacing to provide more natural-sounding translations. It currently supports more than 70 languages and works with standard headphones.
The live translation beta is rolling out on Android devices in the United States, Mexico, and India, with plans to expand to additional platforms and regions in the future.
Expanded Language Practice Features
In addition to translation updates, Google is expanding language practice tools in the Translate app. Users can receive improved feedback during speaking practice sessions and track learning consistency through daily activity streaks.
The language practice feature is expanding to additional countries and now supports more language pairs, including English to German and Portuguese, as well as multiple languages translated into English.
Google stated that it plans to continue refining these features and expanding language support over time.
Try it out today on the official Translate app (available on Android and iOS) or on the the Google Translate website.
