Google Integrates Maps Data into Gemini AI API

Google recently announced that developers can now access Google Maps data directly through the Gemini API. This integration allows AI applications to reference real-time geographical information from Google’s database of over 250 million places.

The new feature lets Gemini to access structured location data including business addresses, operating hours, user ratings, and reviews. When users pose location-related queries, the system automatically retrieves relevant Maps information to inform its responses. Developers can optionally specify latitude and longitude coordinates to focus results on particular geographic areas.

Google also allows developers to combine Maps grounding with its existing Search grounding capability within the same API request, providing both structured place data and broader contextual information from web sources.

Many industries stand to benefit from location-aware AI capabilities. Travel and hospitality businesses can build applications that generate itineraries accounting for actual travel times, current business hours, and seasonal closures.
