Google Gemini Adds AI Video Verification to Help Spot Synthetic Content

Google is expanding its content transparency tools in the Gemini app to make it easier for users to identify AI‑generated videos.

With generative AI producing increasingly convincing media, being able to check authenticity is becoming more important for everyday users.

Users can now upload a video to the Gemini app and have it scan the video for the SynthID watermark, a digital tag Google embeds in content created or edited by its AI tools. You can simply ask a question like, “Was this generated using Google AI?” and along with a yes/no message provides a breakdown showing which parts of the video contain AI‑generated content. For example, it might report “SynthID detected within the audio between 10–20 seconds. No SynthID detected in the visuals.”

The feature supports videos up to 100 MB in size and 90 seconds long, and image and video verification is now available in all languages and countries where Gemini is supported.

SynthID is designed to be imperceptible to viewers but detectable by tools like Gemini. The watermark is added at the moment content is generated and is meant to remain detectable even after common edits like cropping or compression.

The update is part of Google’s broader effort to provide transparency around AI‑generated media, helping users know what’s real and what was created or altered by machine intelligence.

While SynthID currently detects only Google‑AI‑generated content, they’ve collaborated with other tech companies to explore broader standards for AI identification.

As more AI tools produce realistic audio, visuals, and mixed media, there’’s’s a greater risk of deepfakes and manipulated content spreading across social platforms, messaging apps, and news feeds. Tools that help users verify media sources give people a better sense of trust and context before they share or act on what they see online.
