Google Extends Developer Verification and Announces Future App Registration Rules

Over two years ago in July 2023, Google introduced new verification requirements for all new developer accounts on the Play Console, aimed at boosting trust and transparency within the Google Play ecosystem. These measures are now being extended to existing developers who created their accounts before September 2023, with a phased timeline for completion.

Starting from November 2023, developers with older accounts will be prompted to verify their accounts to maintain access to their developer profiles and apps. Developers can choose their verification deadline and request a 90-day extension if needed. Failure to verify by the deadline may result in the removal of their developer profile and apps from Google Play.

Verified developer profiles display official information on Google Play, helping users trust and engage with your apps. Early verification ensures uninterrupted access and helps avoid potential disruptions in app management.

Future App Registration Requirements

In addition to these verification updates, Google has announced a major upcoming change: starting September 2026, all Android apps—whether distributed via Google Play or outside of it—must be registered by verified developers before they can be installed on certified Android devices. This means that developers distributing apps outside of Google Play, such as through direct downloads or third-party marketplaces, will need to register and verify their apps with Google to ensure compatibility with certified devices.

This future requirement underscores the importance of verifying your developer account early, especially if you plan to distribute apps outside of Google Play, as it will be mandatory to maintain access to the Android ecosystem moving forward.

The ongoing verification process enhances platform security and user trust, while the upcoming app registration requirement will further strengthen Android’s safety measures.
