Google Chrome Gets Gemini AI Updates With Side Panel and Auto Browse Capabilities

Google has announced new updates to Gemini in Chrome, integrating its latest Gemini 3 AI model directly into the browser across macOS, Windows, and Chromebook Plus devices.

The update introduces a new side panel experience that allows Gemini to operate alongside open tabs. Google said the side panel is designed to assist users while they browse, without requiring them to leave their current page. The company stated that the assistant can be used for tasks such as summarizing information across websites, comparing content, or helping manage schedules.

Google is also bringing its image transformation tool, Nano Banana, into Chrome. The feature allows users to modify images directly within the browser by entering prompts in the Gemini side panel, without downloading or re-uploading files.

The update adds support for Connected Apps, enabling Gemini in Chrome to work with services such as Gmail, Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Shopping, and Google Flights. Google said these integrations allow the assistant to reference information across apps to help complete tasks within the browser.

AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will also get auto browse, which allows Gemini to carry out multi-step actions on a user’s behalf, joining other browsers that have introduced AI-assisted or agent-style browsing features, such as ChatGPT’s Atlas and Perplexity’s Comet. According to Google, auto browse can perform tasks such as researching information, filling out online forms, scheduling appointments, and managing subscriptions, with user permission. Certain actions, including purchases or social media posts, require explicit user confirmation.

In the coming months, plans include adding Personal Intelligence to Chrome, a feature that stores context from previous interactions from other apps like Gmail, to provide more tailored responses. Users can choose whether to enable the feature and control which apps are connected.

Google also announced that Chrome will support the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard developed with partners including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair and Target, intended to enable AI agents to interact with commerce platforms in a standardized way.

Google stated that Gemini in Chrome includes built-in security controls and confirmation prompts for sensitive actions, and that users remain in control of permissions and connected services.
