Google is expanding Gemini-powered navigation in Google Maps to support walking and cycling, extending conversational AI assistance beyond driving.
With this update rolling out globally on iOS and Android, users can speak directly to Google Maps while navigating. For example, a pedestrian exploring a new area can ask, “What neighborhood am I in?” or “What are the top-rated restaurants nearby?” and receive spoken responses based on their current route and surroundings.
Cyclists can also use hands-free voice prompts such as “What’s my ETA?” or “Text Sarah I’m running 10 minutes late,” allowing them to stay informed and communicate without stopping or taking their hands off the handlebars.
Responses are informed by Google Maps’ real-time location data rather than generic search results. The feature is designed to make navigation more interactive and safer by reducing the need to manually search or type while moving.
