Mozilla is introducing new AI controls in a beta version of the Firefox desktop browser, offering users a centralized way to manage or disable AI-powered features as they browse the web.
The upcoming AI Controls section, scheduled to roll out with Firefox version 148 on February 24, adds a single location in browser settings where users can review individual AI features or block all current and future generative AI enhancements. When AI enhancements are blocked, Firefox will not display prompts or reminders related to AI tools.
Mozilla says the feature is intended to address a wide range of user preferences as AI becomes more common across the web. Some users prefer to avoid AI entirely, while others want access to tools that support productivity, accessibility, and discovery. The new controls are designed to support both approaches without requiring AI features to be enabled by default.
At launch, the controls allow users to manage features such as page translations, AI-generated alt text for images in PDF files, AI-assisted tab grouping, link previews, and a sidebar chatbot. The chatbot feature supports several third-party providers, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, and Le Chat Mistral.
AI preferences set in Firefox will persist across browser updates and can be changed at any time. The AI Controls feature is currently available for early testing in Firefox’s beta and preview channels, with broader availability expected in a future stable release.
