Dolby Laboratories has announced Dolby Vision 2, an update to its industry-leading HDR technology designed to enhance TV picture quality. The new version aims to unlock greater visual performance on modern high-end displays, with features tailored for both content creators and consumers.
Among the improvements, Dolby Vision 2 includes:
- Enhanced Image Processing: Powered by a redesigned Dolby Image Engine, it offers more vibrant colors, higher contrast, and brighter images across a wide range of content, including movies, TV shows, sports, and gaming.
- Content Intelligence: This new system employs AI to automatically optimize picture quality based on what’s being watched and the viewing environment. It features tools such as Precision Black (improves dark scene clarity), Light Sense (adapts to ambient light), and specialized enhancements for sports and gaming.
- Advanced Tone-Mapping: The technology introduces bi-directional tone-mapping, allowing displays to better utilize their increased brightness and color capabilities while preserving artistic intent.
- Beyond HDR: Dolby Vision 2 also includes Authentic Motion, which aims to produce more natural motion effects, reduce judder, and enhance cinematic quality.
Hisense is the first TV brand to support Dolby Vision 2, with upcoming models featuring the MediaTek Pentonic 800 chip integrated with Dolby’s new capabilities. Additionally, media company CANAL+ has committed to supporting Dolby Vision 2 across its content lineup, including live sports and entertainment.
Dolby Vision 2 will be offered in two tiers: Standard which brings core improvements to more mainstream models, and Max for high-end, premium TVs with full feature sets.
Further details on product availability and timing are expected later this year.
