United Natural Foods Inc (UNFI), the largest wholesale distributor of natural and organic products in North America, is currently dealing with the aftermath of a cyberattack that has temporarily disrupted its business operations. The company disclosed the breach on June 5, 2025, after identifying unauthorized activity within some of its IT systems. As a precaution, UNFI took several of its systems offline to contain the situation and mitigate further damage.
UNFI serves a broad market, supplying products to over 30,000 locations across the U.S. and Canada. These include major supermarket chains, independent retailers, e-commerce platforms, and natural product superstores.
The attack has caused significant disruptions to daily operations, notably affecting the company’s ability to process and fulfill customer orders. While UNFI has activated its incident response plan and is working with external cybersecurity experts, the full scope of the damage is still being assessed.
In response to the cyberattack, UNFI has implemented several workarounds to maintain customer service continuity as temporary solutions until systems are fully restored. Information hasn’t yet been released on the effects, such as whether customer data was compromised or if any ransom demands were made by the hackers. Despite the ongoing challenges, UNFI remains focused on resolving the issue and minimizing the impact on its customers.
This breach follows a growing trend of cyberattacks targeting major companies within the food industry. The rise in these types of cyber incidents has raised alarms about the security of critical infrastructure in global supply chains.
