GreyNoise, an online security company, has launched a new public tool designed to show whether an internet connection has been involved in unwanted scanning or suspicious activity.
The service, called GreyNoise IP Check, aims to make it easier for people to identify when their home network is being used by unauthorized software or compromised devices.
Home/personal IP misuse has grown significantly over the past year. Attackers increasingly rely on infected routers, compromised smart-home devices, and hijacked browsers to route their internet traffic through ordinary households. Because these devices continue to function normally, most people never realize their IP address is being used to scan the internet or participate in automated attacks.
GreyNoise IP Check provides a simple report based on the IP address visiting the site. A clean result indicates no observed scanning behavior in GreyNoise’s global sensor data. If the tool identifies malicious or suspicious activity, the page shows when the behavior was first and last detected and what types of scanning were involved. This can help users determine whether a home router, computer, or connected device needs further investigation.
The tool also distinguishes between home connections and known business infrastructure. Users on corporate networks, cloud platforms, or VPN services may see their IP classified as part of common business services, which is expected for those environments.
For advanced use cases, GreyNoise offers a programmatic option. The service can be queried through a simple command-line request, returning information in JSON format. This allows administrators or technically inclined users to incorporate network reputation checks into scripts, automation workflows, or device onboarding processes.
GreyNoise says the goal is to give anyone a straightforward way to understand how their IP address has appeared on the internet, without requiring an account or sharing personal information.
