To address these concerns, Cloudflare has announced new capabilities within its Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) feature, part of its Cloudflare One platform, aimed at providing deeper visibility and control over AI tool usage.
The rapid adoption of AI tools offers substantial benefits from automating routine tasks to enhancing decision-making. But these advantages can come with risks such as misconfigurations, data leaks, unauthorized sharing, and compliance violations.
Until now, monitoring and securing AI environments has often required complex, manual processes or software installed directly on user devices.
The new approach from Cloudflare involves leveraging API-based integrations that enable organizations to assess the security posture of their AI tools without invasive or cumbersome software deployments. Specifically, the platform now supports monitoring OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini.
Cloudflare’s CASB offers a comprehensive set of features designed to help organizations understand and control their AI tool usage more effectively. These include:
- Agentless connectivity
Organizations can link their AI accounts via APIs, avoiding the need for endpoint agents, which simplifies deployment and reduces management overhead. - Security posture evaluation:
The system scans configurations for common misconfigurations or insecure settings that could lead to data exposure, such as models that are publicly shared or weak access controls. - Data loss prevention and insights:
Organizations can review how employees are using these tools—identifying risky behaviors, such as sharing personal and confidential data or proprietary code, or over-permissioned accounts—and respond swiftly to potential threats.
To give organizations clarity on how their AI platforms are being used and to help identify potential security issues, Cloudflare’s CASB integrates with each tool in a tailored way. Instead of generic monitoring, these integrations analyze behaviors and configurations specific to each platform. This allows security teams to understand usage patterns, detect misconfigurations, and respond quickly to any anomalies. Here’s how the system’s capabilities are applied to each supported AI tool:
- ChatGPT (OpenAI): The system identifies shared chat links, API keys, and uploads containing sensitive content. It highlights when users activate features like web browsing or code execution, providing real-time insights into how the platform is being used.
- Claude (Anthropic): It scans for high-risk invites, stale or over-privileged API keys, and uploads containing sensitive data, helping organizations maintain tighter control as Claude’s features expand.
- Google Gemini: Focuses on managing user identities, MFA status, and license hygiene—critical for preventing unauthorized access—especially given Gemini’s integration with Google Workspace tools like Gmail and Docs.
This progress reflects a broader industry move toward embedding security controls directly into AI platforms. By providing out-of-band visibility into configurations and usage, organizations can better detect vulnerabilities and enforce policies without disrupting workflows.
