Apple Deploys Updates Fixing Security Flaws on iPhone, iPad & macOS

Apple has recently brought a series of crucial security updates for Apple users, covering iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

All the latest updates (iOS and iPad OS 18.6.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.6.1) address a vulnerability in Apple’s ImageIO framework. This is a behind-the-scenes system that helps your device process image files whether you’re browsing the web, opening email attachments, or scrolling through social media.

According to Apple’s security notes, a malicious image could be crafted and, when opened, could trigger memory corruption on your device. This could let hackers run unauthorized code, potentially gaining access to your data or your device itself. They also noted that the flaw may have already been exploited in an extremely sophisticated and targetted attacks.”

Specific devices and models affected include the:

  • iPhone XS and newer
  • iPads: iPad Pro 13-inch, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd gen and newer), iPad Pro 11-inch (all), iPad Air (3rd gen and newer), iPad 7th gen and newer, iPad mini (5th gen and newer), and some older Pro and iPad 6th gen models
  • Macs: macOS Sequoia, Sonoma, and Ventura users

Apple reports that this was resolved by improving the system’s boundary checks, closing the loophole that hackers might use.

Vulnerabilities like this can be exploited as part of broad attacks or through compromised websites and emails.
