Acer Releases Patch for Care/Control Center Vulnerability

Acer recently discovered a security issue affecting its Acer Care Center and Acer Control Center software. These programs come pre-installed on many Acer laptops and desktops (since 2014 for verisons as early as Windows 8.1) and are designed to help users manage updates, perform system checks, and connect with support.

The issue involved how these programs handled software updates. In certain situations, unauthorized users could potentially tamper with update files, posing a risk to system integrity and user data.

Fix Released

To fix the problem, Acer released a patch for both applications, improving how the authenticity of updates is checked ensuring only safe, verified files are downloaded and installed.

If you use Acer Care Center or Acer Control Center, the fix has already started rolling out automatically. As soon as the software starts up, it should begin updating itself—no action needed in most cases.

You can also manually check within the app’s about section. To do so:

  • Open Acer Care Center (or Acer Control Center).
  • Look for the information icon (usually a small “i” in a circle).
  • Click it and select “Check for updates” to confirm you have the latest version.

Regular software updates are essential for security, even for known, trusted tools.
