Clicks, the company that first gained attention for its physical Power Keyboard accessory designed to restore tactile typing to modern devices, is now planning something far more ambitious: its own standalone smartphone. While the Power Keyboard focuses on improving typing experiences across existing phones, tablets, televisions, and even AR/VR platforms, the company’s next step is to rethink the smartphone itself. The upcoming Clicks Communicator is positioned as a compact, communication-first device in a market dominated by large displays, entertainment-centric features, and constant scrolling.
Rather than competing on screen size or media consumption capabilities, the Communicator emphasizes structure, focus, and deliberate use. Although it is still in the reservation stage and not yet shipping, it has already generated attention due to its unusual combination of nostalgic design elements and modern smartphone hardware.
Smartphone Built for Communication Rather Than Consumption
The Clicks Communicator is deliberately compact. It features a 4.03-inch AMOLED display paired with a physical QWERTY keyboard that is central to the experience rather than an optional accessory. The keyboard supports shortcuts, touch-sensitive scrolling, and integrates the fingerprint reader into the spacebar. A dedicated side button enables voice dictation, recording, and transcription, reflecting the focus on efficient, purposeful interaction.
Software features such as a unified messaging hub and a customizable notification LED are intended to prioritize important communication and reduce the noise of constant alerts. While the device is smaller than most smartphones, it still runs Android 16, supports full modern app functionality, and can act either as a primary smartphone or a secondary communication-focused device alongside a mainstream flagship.
Despite its compact design, the Communicator uses current-generation technology. It includes a 50-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization, a 24-megapixel front camera, 5G connectivity, Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi 6/6E/ax, Qi2 wireless charging, USB-C, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and 256GB of onboard storage with microSD expansion up to 2TB. Power is supplied by a 4,000 mAh silicon-carbon battery, although Clicks is not yet quoting final real-world endurance numbers.
From a longevity and security standpoint, the company promises two years of Android version updates and five years of security updates, along with Android Strongbox secure storage support and a physical kill switch. At approximately 170g and 12mm thick, the device intentionally diverges from ultra-thin flagship designs in favor of practicality and comfort.
Availability
The Clicks Communicator has not yet entered full production and is currently available only through a reservation program. Prospective buyers can place a refundable deposit or pay early at a discounted “early bird” price. Manufacturing timelines, carrier certification, and final performance characteristics are still being finalized, which naturally introduces uncertainty.
As with any pre-release hardware, potential customers should weigh enthusiasm for the concept against unanswered questions, including long-term support, battery performance, and whether the device meaningfully changes user behavior around distraction.
The Clicks Communicator represents an uncommon attempt to rethink the smartphone around communication, control, and intentional use rather than unlimited consumption. Whether it succeeds will depend on execution and sustained support, but it is a thoughtful entry in a market that rarely challenges its own assumptions.
