Apple Debuts AirTag 2 with Longer Range and Improved Findability

Apple has introduced an updated version of AirTag, its compact accessory that helps users locate personal belongings using the Find My network. The new AirTag retains the same small design as its predecessor, remains compatible with existing accessories, and is available individually or in four-packs at the same prices as before. Personalized engraving continues to be offered at no additional cost. The device requires a compatible iPhone or iPad running the latest software, and supported Apple Watch models can now also use Precision Finding.

Environmental responsibility has been emphasized in the redesign, with a higher proportion of recycled materials incorporated into the device and fully fiber-based packaging for shipping. Existing accessories, including the FineWoven key rings, remain compatible.

Key Features and Improvements

The updated AirTag uses Apple’s second-generation ultra-wideband technology, extending the effective range for Precision Finding. Users can now receive directional guidance, distance information, and haptic feedback from farther away than previously possible, which is especially useful in large indoor spaces or crowded outdoor environments. Supported Apple Watch models allow items to be located directly from the wrist, providing convenience when a phone is not at hand.

The internal speaker has also been redesigned to produce a louder and more distinct alert. This increase in volume improves audibility when items are hidden in bags, furniture, or noisy surroundings. Combined with Precision Finding, it makes locating misplaced items faster and more reliable.

Privacy and Anti-Tracking Safeguards

The AirTag relies on Apple’s Find My network, a crowdsourced system that uses nearby Apple devices to detect and report lost items. Location data is encrypted end to end, and only the AirTag owner can view the item’s location. Apple does not have access to identifying information from devices that help locate lost items.

The updated AirTag also supports temporary sharing of item locations with trusted third parties. This is particularly useful for situations like delayed or misplaced luggage, where airlines or service providers can assist in recovery. Access is time-limited, revocable by the owner, and automatically expires after a set period, maintaining user control over data.

Privacy and safety remain central to its design. The AirTag device is primarily intended for tracking personal belongings and does not store location history internally with users are notified if an unfamiliar tracker is nearby.

The refreshed AirTag includes improvements in range, audibility, and compatibility with Apple Watch models, while keeping the same design, pricing, and accessory support as the previous version.
