Google is expanding its suite of safety tools on Android with its new feature, Emergency Live Video, which allows users to share a secure, real-time video feed with emergency dispatchers. The feature aims to help responders better understand unfolding situations when seconds matter and communication may be difficult.
The update reflects a growing emphasis on smartphone-driven public safety innovation, building on existing features like Car Crash Detection, Emergency Location Service, and Satellite SOS, while giving dispatchers clearer context before help arrives.
Android’s new tool allows dispatchers to request a live video feed directly from a caller’s device during an emergency interaction. If responders determine that visual information would be beneficial, and that it’s safe for the user, they can send a prompt during the call or text exchange. The user can then choose to begin streaming their camera feed with a single tap. The goal is simple: give responders the ability to evaluate a situation visually so they can coordinate assistance more effectively.
This added context can help dispatchers make faster decisions, relay better guidance, or walk a caller through urgent actions while professional help is on the way.
Google notes that the feature is encrypted, and the caller maintains full control over when video is shared. The stream only begins if the user explicitly agrees, and sharing can be ended immediately at any time.
No advance setup is required, and the system works within existing emergency workflows. The design centers on consent, clarity, and minimizing friction for users who may already be under stress.
Emergency Live Video is launching in the United States and select regions of Germany and Mexico, with additional expansions planned. The feature is supported on Android devices running Android 8 or later with Google Play services enabled.
Because emergency response systems vary widely across countries, Google is collaborating with public safety organizations to broaden support. Agencies interested in bringing the capability to their region can access technical guidance through Google’s partner resources.
As smartphones continue to play an integral role in emergency communication, features like Emergency Live Video highlight how modern devices can provide more than voice or text information. Android aims to shorten response times, improve situational awareness, and support better outcomes during emergencies, while turning everyday devices into reliable safety tools.
